I’ve Been Visiting New Buffalo, Michigan for 30 Years—Here’s Why It’s Better Than Ever
By Kelly Aiglon, Midwest Living

The charm of New Buffalo unfolds softly, a bit like the sunset melting into a warm haze over Lake Michigan. From my experience, you must slowly soak it in for the full effect. I’ve been visiting this small town on the southwest shoreline of Michigan for the better part of 30 years. Sometimes for girlfriend getaways (shopping downtown is good for the soul). Other times, on family vacations (ice cream binges galore). And, most recently, on a couple’s escape. It was during this last visit that I discovered just how evolved New Buffalo has become, especially the food and drink scene. Of course, many former favorite spots, including New Buffalo Beach and David’s Delicatessen, are still thriving. Combine old and new for a weekend full of relaxation, discovery and good eating, just an hour from Chicago. Here are some top spots to add to your itinerary.

New Buffalo is just one destination in a region known as Harbor Country. Drive north or south on the Red Arrow Highway, and you’ll encounter numerous farm stands and roadside stops (burgers at Redamak’s are a must), plus other appealing towns to explore. For example, just 7 miles inland from New Buffalo, Three Oaks is a quaint community where you can catch a play at The Acorn or sip whiskey at The Journeyman distillery. Or take a longer, half-hour jaunt north to St. Joseph and Benton Harbor for more great eats and a whirl on the iconic beachside merry-go-round.
