Michigan’S Best Explores Southwest Michigan Craft Distilleries Today
Michigan’s Best distillery tour begins.
We kick off our Michigan craft distillery tour today, with stops in Southwest Michigan. Yesterday, we got a spirit education from Garry Boyd from Hopcat.

Today, our Michigan’s Best team of John Gonzalez and Amy Sherman kick off their tour of Michigan craft distilleries in Southwest Michigan.
We’re excited to learn more about the growing artisanal spirits business here in Michigan. We’ll be visiting 26 different craft distilleries over the next two weeks. And yes, we have designated drivers.
The sprits industry is on the rise here in Michigan, following the incredible success of Michigan made wine and beer. There are around 35 distilleries in Michigan, we’ve decided to focus on those that are considered “craft” distilleries.
The trade group Michigan Craft Distillers Association, which formed in 2014, explains the difference on their web site:
-
CRAFT DISTILLER
MERCHANT DISTILLER
-
Holds Federal Distilled Spirits Plant (DSP) and Michigan Small Distillers Licenses and acts as an independent rectifier, blender or bottler on the licensed premises.
And while there is room for both kinds here in Michigan and in the marketplace, we are focusing on those producers who are distilling on site, in Michigan.
